Typical symptoms of coronavirus anxiety:
The combination of virus-related worries and social distancing will sometimes cause the following symptoms:
- repetetive negative thoughts
- sleeping difficulties
- loss of appetite or overeating
- substance abuse (alcohol, drugs etc.)
- feeling afraid about ordinary events
- increased heart rate
- feeling sick/upset stomach/digestive problems

Take care of yourself if you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms. If you are a foreigner living in Germany, it's important to know where and how to get treatment, e.g. psychotherapy or counselling. For many foreigners, it's crucial to speak to someone in English about their mental conditions. How therapy can help with pandemic anxiety:
As with all anxiety disorders, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the most widely-used therapy for symptoms such as panic, phobia, social anxiety or generalised fear. CBT helps to control anxiety, stop worrisome thoughts and overcome fears and it's a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy. CBT addresses negative thought patterns and distortions in the way we look at the world and ourselves. The basic premise of CBT is that it's not external effects, but our thoughts that mostly affect the way we feel. Same events can lead to completely different emotions in different people. It all depends on our individual perceptions, interpretations, expectations, attitudes and beliefs. CBT will help you to change your cognitive patterns and by doing this, change your behaviour as well as the way you feel.
"I'm scared that therapy will make me feel worse"
In my view, therapy should not hurt. Instead, it should be a pleasant and inspiring experience. Whereas it is completely normal to be nervous or anxious before attending a therapy session for the first time, you should expect to feel good and positive after the sessions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving without focussing on the past. Any kind of therapy should help you grow in awareness, understanding, responsibility and acceptance and it should give you the freedom to choose and create the life that you deserve.
