Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, that aims specifically at helping reduce the symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD):
DBT is one of the best treatments for BPD
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy can reduce psychiatric hospitalisation, substance abuse, self-harming and suicidal behaviour. Patients who have been diagnosed with BPD suffer mainly from emotion dysregulation. DBT focuses on helping these patients to learn and apply skills that will decrease their emotion dysregulation and help to cope with strong emotions in a healthier way.
What can you expect from DBT?
DBT teaches four main types of skills:
- Mindfulness meditation skills
- Interpersonal effectiveness skills
- Distress tolerance skills
- Emotion regulation skills
The teaching of mindfulness meditation skills focuses on being fully in the present moment, without judging experiences as good or bad. You will learn to observe, describe and participate in everything that is happening around you without feeling overwhelmed by your emotions. Training your interpersonal effectiveness skills will enable you to manage conflicts and successfully express your needs in relationships. By learning distress tolerance skills you will learn how to tolerate strong negative emotions, such as anxiety, anger or pain, without increasing these negative emotion or engaging in self-harm, impulsive or even risky behaviour. Patients suffering from BPD often use drugs, alcohol or other risky actions in order to temporarily feel better. DBT can help you overcome these unhealthy behaviour patterns. Learning emotion regulation skills focuses on how to identify and manage your emotional reactions, so that you can gain control over how you respond. DBT teaches you how to deal with emotions without lashing out.
